SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
Solar factual data for the period between the 4th and 10th Aug.
Apart from a steadying in geomagnetic levels, there was almost
no change. Sporadic E was still very persistent in the south, with
the 5th and 6th seeing 11 and 10 hours respectively. However, spread
F has returned during hours of darkness for stations in the north.
The sunspot count had declined to zero again by the end of the
period, although it had been between 11 and 15 on most days.Solar
flux levels declined slowly to around 69 units. As a matter of
interest, solar flux levels fell to just over 67 units during the
last two sunspot minima. This suggests that the present minimum is
still a little way off.
The geomagnetic A index declined from a sub storm level of 25
units on the 4th to a quiet of 7 units by the 10th. The higher
levels of magnetic disturbance are mostly affecting stations in the
northern parts of the UK. The index averaged 9 units.
The Inda index for the period between the 20th of July and the
4th Aug was quiet.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
The F2 critical frequencies averaged 5.5MHz but they varied
between 6.3MHz on the 7th and 5MHz by the 10th. Sporadic E was
reported every day, with 11 hours on the 5th and 10 hours on the
6th. Levels;s almost reached complete blanketing.
There was not much variation in the darkness hour lows and the
average was 2.7MHz. The general increase due to summer seasonal
effects is now expected to slow down and decline during the next few
weeks. This is expected to take levels down to about 1.8MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
There was almost no change in F2 critical frequencies during
the period. the daily highs averaged 4.9MHz, although they were down
to only 4.4MHz on the 4th and up to 5.4MHz on the 8th. The overall
trend is still towards declining F2 levels. The summer seasonal
effects have not been evident this year and this is a sign that
sunspot minimum is very nearly here.
The darkness hour lows are also continuing to decline and are
now averaging 1.8MHz. The normal seasonal effects are evident in
this area and a further decline is expected. Spread F was present
during hours of darkness on every day of the period.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
Solar activity is expected to remain at a very low level;
intermittent sub flares may occur but not much is expected from
them. Solar flux levels are expected to be steady at around 69
units. Geomagnetic levels are expected to rise slowly by the
weekend.
The F2 critical frequencies are expected to decline as the week
proceeds. Levels around 5.2MHz in the south and 4.8MHz in the north
are expected, which correspond to M.U.F.s of 16MHz in the south and
14.5MHz in the north. There could be severe spread F during darkness
hours.
